She Left Without a Rope: The Tragedy of Maria, Thrown from a Bridge Without a Safety Harness

In a scene that shook Brazil and the world, a moment of adventure meant to be fun turned into a tragedy that claimed the life of a young woman in the prime of her life. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, was seeking thrill and excitement in the sport of rope jumping, but a shocking negligence on the part of those running the activity turned her life into a painful memory.

The Painful Details of the Incident

On June 13, 2026, Maria, an aspiring physical education teacher, went to the abandoned "Eskeleton" Bridge in São Paulo state, Brazil—a site known for unlicensed extreme sports activities. Maria asked the instructors to throw her off the bridge in an "airplane" style, where two instructors would hold her on their shoulders while she stretched her arms out like wings. However, the catastrophe was that the rope meant to protect her was never actually attached.

A circulating video showed the instructors hurling Maria from a height of 130 feet (about 40 meters) into the abyss, while one onlooker screamed in warning: "The rope, people, the rope!" After her deafening fall, a nurse who happened to be off-duty, Raíza Dias, rushed to the scene, only to discover that Maria was still alive. Raíza struggled immensely to descend the rugged terrain, injuring her hand in the process of trying to reach the young woman. The nurse recounted: "I saw her breathing heavily; I looked into her pupils, which were unfortunately dilated, and I felt a very weak pulse, but she was still alive." She tried to encourage Maria, saying, "No one dies on my watch," but Maria passed away shortly after.

The Accused and Arrests

Military police in Brazil detained six people for questioning and charged three of the jump supervisors with intentional homicide. They were identified as Maicon Fernandes Sentra (42), Luís Felipe Feliciano Egorov (32), and Vítor de Freitas Gonçalves (27). The suspects admitted they "couldn't remember" whether they had attached Maria's safety rope or not, claiming they suffered a "memory lapse" during the preparations. Reports also indicated that they were not licensed to operate the activity at that location.

Reactions and Aftermath

Maria's mother expressed her grief and shock in a heartfelt social media post, saying: "That cursed rope took you from me forever... My beloved daughter, you are gone, and all that remains here is pain and longing. I will love you forever." Her boyfriend, who was with her at the time, also shared an emotional message: "I still can't believe it. I think it's a nightmare and I'll wake up... You are the most amazing person I've ever met."

This incident is not the first of its kind at the Eskeleton Bridge. In April 2024, a 39-year-old cyclist died after falling from the same bridge, and in August 2025, two women were seriously injured in a similar accident. The municipality of Limeira, where the bridge is located, announced it would take legal action against the Brazilian federal government for failing to secure the dangerous site, despite repeated warnings. Mayor Murilo Félix stated: "We have been demanding action for months to ensure the federal government takes responsibility... Unfortunately, its inaction has just resulted in yet another tragedy in Limeira."

Maria's tragedy stands as a stark reminder that a single moment of negligence can turn pleasure into eternal devastation, and a powerful call that the spirit of adventure must always be accompanied by the highest standards of safety and responsibility.
